Mak Cheung states:- I am at present unemployed. Formerly and up to the 19th of the 5th moon, I was employed as a watcher for the gambling house in Cheung Hing Street. I was employed by Lam Chi. I also used to watch for the gambling house in Wa Lane. I had 40 cents a day wages from the gambling houses, 20 cents from Cheung Hing Street and 20 cents from Wa Lane. I have been a watcher for these gambling houses for the last 3 or 4 years.

Besides watching in the street, I had to pay hush money to the Indian Police on the beats in the neighbourhood. I used to pay money to whatever men were on the beats daily.
